Namibia’s President Calls for Unity, Economic Progress

Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged citizens to embrace national unity and focus on economic development as the country continues to build on its independence gains.

Speaking during the 59th annual Heroes’ Day commemoration in Katima Mulilo, the capital of the Zambezi Region, on Tuesday, Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted her administration’s priorities, which include youth empowerment, industrialisation, and a strong fight against corruption. The commemoration, themed “Built on Bravery, Bound for a Prosperous Future,” was the first to be held since the passing of Namibia’s founding President, Sam Nujoma, in February.

Reflecting on the country’s liberation struggle, she paid tribute to those who fought for independence, noting that their sacrifice laid the foundation for Namibia’s freedom. While acknowledging persistent challenges, the president said the nation had made significant progress in education, healthcare, access to water and electricity, and financial services since independence.

She reiterated her government’s determination to harness Namibia’s natural resources through industrialisation, create more jobs, empower young people, and strengthen the country’s anti-corruption efforts. According to her, Namibia’s political freedom must now be matched with economic independence to ensure shared prosperity.

Heroes’ Day, marked annually on August 26, honours the start of Namibia’s armed resistance against South Africa’s apartheid regime. On that date in 1966, the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia, the military wing of SWAPO, launched its first major battle against South African forces.
