World Bicycle Day: FRSC urges cyclists to wear helmets, observe safety rules

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Jigawa State has called on cyclists and other road users to prioritise safety by consistently wearing helmets and adopting other protective measures while on the road.

This appeal was contained in a statement issued in Dutse on Wednesday by the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Umar Mas’udu, as part of activities marking World Bicycle Day.

World Bicycle Day is observed every June 3 to highlight the importance of bicycles in promoting sustainable transport, good health, and social inclusion. The celebration, established by the United Nations in 2018, recognises the bicycle as a simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation.

The command joined the global community in commemorating the 8th United Nations World Bicycle Day, with this year’s theme, “Boosting Urban Life With the Bicycle.”

Mas’udu noted that cycling plays a key role in reducing environmental pollution, encouraging healthier living, and supporting the development of sustainable urban centres.

He further described cycling as a multifaceted activity that serves transportation, health, and environmental purposes, urging motorists and cyclists to share the road responsibly, respect one another, and consistently observe safety practices such as helmet use and improved visibility.

He added that the command’s activities for the day include a public awareness rally, safety lectures for cycling groups, and the distribution of reflective stickers to cyclists across major towns in the state.
