The Lagos branch of the Federal Government College, Warri Old Students Association (Fegocowosa) on Saturday celebrated the ninth edition of its annual Sports Carnival and Family Fun Day, highlighting the role of sports in fostering unity among members.
The event, held at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Pitch, featured a variety of activities including football, athletics, table tennis, and board games such as chess, scrabble, and ludo. Participants also enjoyed fun races like the sack and egg races, adding a playful touch to the festivities.
Chairman of the Lagos branch, Sanya Otuyalo, described the carnival as part of a longstanding tradition that brings members together through shared values and sporting activities. He noted that the event offered an opportunity for alumni to reconnect, relive fond memories, and strengthen their bonds in a relaxed atmosphere.
Families were encouraged to attend, with a dedicated children’s section that included slides, face painting, and popcorn. Otuyalo also congratulated Independence House for clinching the top spot and encouraged other houses to step up their game ahead of the next edition.
According to Fegocowosa Secretary-General, Omuaro Eru, sports play a vital role in promoting physical fitness and emotional well-being, which is why they remain at the core of the association’s programmes. She explained that new features, such as a bouncing castle and a kids’ corner, were introduced this year to create a more inclusive experience for families.
Although hosted by the Lagos branch, the event drew participation from alumni in other states, including Abuja, reflecting the association’s unity and wide reach. Eru also highlighted the personal health benefits of the carnival, mentioning that she clocked over 20,000 steps during the activities.
Independence House emerged overall champions, with Unity House taking second place and National House coming in third. Games Captain of Independence House, Festus Dike, expressed joy over their victory and vowed to defend their title in the next edition.
