Port Harcourt, June 4, 2026 — A senior official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Rivers State has called on residents to embrace regular sporting activities as part of efforts to improve healthy living.
The Sector Commander, Mr Francis Ajatta, made the appeal during the 2026 World Bicycle Day celebration held in Port Harcourt.
He noted that the annual event, initiated by the United Nations, was organised in partnership with the Rivers State Bicycle Riders Association to promote awareness on cycling and its benefits.
Ajatta said the programme was designed to sensitise the public on the health, economic and environmental advantages of cycling.
He also appealed to relevant authorities to incorporate bicycle lanes into modern road designs to enhance the safety of cyclists.
According to him, cycling remains a cost-effective alternative for short-distance travel, adding that it can reduce transport expenses for commuters.
He further explained that beyond cost savings and physical fitness benefits, cycling is an eco-friendly mode of transport that helps reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion and improve road aesthetics.
“Unlike other means of transportation, bicycles do not emit carbon into the atmosphere. They are also environmentally friendly and help reduce traffic congestion,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, a retired cycling coach, Mr Emmanuel Onosenya, commended the FRSC for its collaboration and support for cycling development.
Onosenya advocated stronger partnerships between government and the private sector to fully harness opportunities within the sport.
He noted that cycling, with a growing membership base in the state, has the potential to positively reshape young people if properly developed and supported.
He added that sports could serve as a rehabilitation and empowerment tool for youths who have engaged in social vices.
“When young people redirect their energy into sports, they can be rehabilitated and become productive members of society,” he said.
He pledged continued efforts to raise awareness on the benefits of cycling and other sporting activities among young people.
