The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has impounded more than 250 commercial vehicles within a two-day period for overloading violations, marking the start of a full-scale enforcement of safety regulations in the territory. The FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the Command’s Public Education Officer, Mrs. Helen Ntaji. The enforcement operation, which commenced on October 2, specifically targeted the prevalent practice of carrying two passengers in the front seat of taxis.Corps Commander Theman stated that the high number of apprehensions highlights the persistent scale of traffic violations in the FCT, despite months of consistent engagement and education campaigns directed at transport unions. He explained that his primary focus since assuming office has been to restore dignity and safety for passengers, emphasizing that enforcement is a necessary measure to ensure compliance with traffic laws. He detailed that overloading not only makes the use of seatbelts impossible but also compromises vehicle suspension and tyres, while critically limiting a driver’s control during emergencies.Theman added that the operation is being conducted in collaboration with mobile magistrate courts to facilitate the immediate prosecution of offenders. He announced that the full activation of these mobile courts across the FCT would commence on October 6 to intensify the enforcement drive. The commander also issued a warning to drivers operating vehicles that fall below minimum safety standards, advising them to upgrade their vehicles or risk having them impounded. He noted that transport unions have pledged their full support for the initiative and urged passengers to cooperate in order to protect their right to safe and dignified transportation.
