NLA Hails First Lady for Mobilising N20.7bn Towards National Library Completion

The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) has lauded the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her initiative that secured N20.7 billion in support of completing the National Library headquarters in Abuja. In a statement jointly signed on Saturday by its President, Dr. Lawal Umar, and Secretary, Dr. Amogu Kalu, the association characterized the First Lady’s action as a demonstration of profound patriotism and visionary leadership. The NLA highlighted that Senator Tinubu, in lieu of accepting personal gifts for her 65th birthday, instead urged well-wishers and donors to contribute to the National Library Project Fund. The association noted that the dedicated fundraising account will remain active until December 2025 to garner further donations.According to the statement, this intervention has revitalized hopes for the conclusion of the long-stalled project and reaffirmed the critical role of libraries in advancing education, literacy, and national development.“For decades, the unfinished National Library has been a source of disappointment. Your Excellency’s intervention has injected fresh momentum and spotlighted the value of a modern repository of knowledge to the country’s intellectual growth,” the NLA stated. The association pledged its commitment to collaborate with the Office of the First Lady to ensure the completed facility is properly equipped and fully functional. It further called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to commit to sustained annual budgetary allocations to guarantee the library’s effective operation post-completion.The NLA concluded by stating that the funds raised symbolize the collective goodwill of the Nigerian people and that the First Lady’s name has been “written in gold” for her exceptional contributions to education and literacy in the nation.
