The United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the “heinous and cowardly” terrorist attacks in Kwara State, where more than 160 people were reportedly killed.
The attacks, which occurred on Feb. 3 in the Nuku and Woro communities, also led to the abduction of scores of women and children, as well as widespread destruction of property.
In a statement issued in New York, members of the Council underlined the need to “hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.”
The Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
It urged all States, in line with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of Nigeria.
“The members of the Security Council reiterated that all acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever, and by whoever,” the statement read.
The Council further emphasised the need for all States to combat threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.
Members of the Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Nigeria.
They also wished a speedy and full recovery to those injured and called for the safe return of those abducted.
