Senate multi-committee budget defence sessions play a key role in examining government spending plans and setting policy priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.
Senator Ned Nwoko (APC-Delta), representing Delta North Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, made this observation while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.
He highlighted his participation in high-level budget defence meetings across the Finance, Local Government, Sports, and Defence sectors, noting that such engagement reinforces legislative oversight and accountability in public finances.
“As a member of these committees, I interacted directly with ministry and agency officials, contributing to discussions and raising questions to ensure transparency and efficiency in the management of public resources,” Nwoko said.
He described budget defence as a critical step in the legislative appropriation process, enabling lawmakers to review proposed expenditures, verify programme justifications, and ensure that allocations align with national development objectives.
“These sessions allow committees to examine funding requests, assess performance benchmarks, and evaluate implementation frameworks submitted by government agencies,” he added.
Nwoko emphasised that the meetings provide a vital forum to interrogate proposals, test the assumptions behind projected spending, and evaluate whether allocations deliver measurable value to the public.
During the Finance sector review, discussions focused on revenue projections, fiscal discipline, and strategies for macroeconomic stability. In the Local Government sessions, deliberations examined grassroots funding, administrative capacity, and mechanisms to improve service delivery at the subnational level.
The Sports budget review addressed infrastructure plans, athlete support programmes, and strategies to enhance international competitiveness. Meanwhile, Defence sector discussions concentrated on security funding requirements, procurement frameworks, and operational readiness, balancing immediate needs with long-term capability development.
By participating in multiple committees, Nwoko said he contributed significantly to cross-sectoral oversight and the alignment of government policies with national priorities.
