Practitioners to Benefit from National Theatre’s Professional Training Support

The National Theatre has announced plans to strengthen the capacity of theatre and film professionals by providing specialised training that combines artistic development with business management skills.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Tola Akerele, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.

She noted that many practitioners have repeatedly highlighted the need for structured training in four core areas of expertise.

Akerele stressed that the programme supports the Federal Government’s drive to expand the creative economy as a contributor to national growth.

She further explained that the initiative targets professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge in the technical dimensions of stage and film production.

The training modules cover four focus areas: costume design, research and development, narrative scoring, and project management for stage productions.

According to her, the curriculum is designed to close critical skill gaps in Nigeria’s creative industry, build local expertise, and open new career pathways.

She pointed out that the creative sector holds vast potential for economic empowerment, but practitioners need both technical know-how and entrepreneurial guidance to thrive.
Akerele added that the upcoming programme aims to bridge this gap by blending practical training with business-oriented learning.

Scheduled to run from September 22 to October 24, the hybrid training will offer a mix of hands-on sessions and business development classes.
It will be delivered in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation, with facilitators including Ré Olunuga, Dr. Leesi Patrick, Lydia Yakula, and Yoanna Okwesa.
