The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Saturday conducted congresses across all 18 local government areas to elect new executive committees and national delegates.
The exercise, supervised in Benin City by the State Caretaker Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, alongside a delegation from the party’s national headquarters led by Mr. Hillary Okute, was described as peaceful and transparent.
At the Oredo local government secretariat, where an 18-member executive and a national delegate were elected, Aziegbemi hailed the congress as the “rebirth” of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“What you are witnessing is the beginning of a new PDP in Nigeria. The ward congresses we held last week were the best organised in the state, and today’s exercise has further demonstrated the joy and enthusiasm of our members,” he said.
The chairman accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of worsening hardship in the country, saying millions of Nigerians go hungry daily. He added that the PDP was determined to reclaim power at both federal and state levels in the coming election cycles.
Looking ahead, Aziegbemi assured that the state congress, scheduled for September 27 in Benin, would be well-organised and peaceful, paving the way for the party’s national convention in Abuja this November.
Also speaking, Okute, who chaired the LGA congress panel, commended the process as evidence of careful planning and unity within the Edo PDP.
“What we have seen here today is remarkable. The discipline, decorum and spirit of brotherhood reflect a new dawn not just for Edo PDP but for the party nationwide,” he said.
