Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has restated his administration’s commitment to fairness and neutrality in traditional leadership matters.
Speaking on Saturday at the formal presentation of the staff of office to Oba Isiaka Adu as the Alale of Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government, the governor said the step was taken to restore lasting peace in the community after decades of disputes and prolonged legal battles.
Aiyedatiwa explained that the government’s action should not be interpreted as favoritism toward any ruling house but as an obligation to uphold justice and court rulings that affirmed Adu’s claim to the throne.
“It is only fair to allow Oba Isiaka Adu, who secured favorable judgments across all judicial levels, to enjoy the benefits of his legal victory in the interest of equity and justice,” the governor said.
He further clarified that although the Olugbade Ruling House was expected to produce the next monarch following the passing of Oba Sunday Adeyeye Ajimo in March 2025, the state government had to respect the subsisting court decisions.
“This is not a matter of preference for any ruling house. It is a decision taken to safeguard peace and stability in Akungba. You are now a father to all, and your reign must promote unity, peace, and progress for the entire community,” he added.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, applauded the governor’s commitment to due process in resolving the protracted tussle, while Chairman of Akoko South-West Local Government, Ayo Ajana, described the occasion as a new beginning for Akungba.
In his remarks, Oba Adu expressed deep gratitude to God and the state government for making his installation a reality. He acknowledged the Supreme Court ruling that confirmed his right to the throne, noting that the development marked the fulfillment of a journey that began in 1951 with the aspirations of the Agure royal family.
The monarch pledged to use his reign to foster unity and drive development in Akungba.
