The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, performed a spiritual purification ceremony to ward off evil forces as part of the Ugie Emobo rite of the annual Igue Festival.
The ceremony, held at the Benin Palace, is one of the key traditional rites marking the Igue celebration, according to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Mr Osaigbovo Iguobaro.
Iguobaro explained that the ritual symbolises the historic defeat of a Benin giant, Prince Idubor, popularly known as Aruan, who resided in Udo, now in Ovia South West Local Government Area. Aruan was defeated by Prince Osawe, who later ascended the throne as Oba Esigie centuries ago.
“The Oba’s dance steps, accompanied by soul-stirring songs and the drums of the Ogbelaka group, reflected deep communication with nature and humanity,” Iguobaro said.
The ceremony began with ancestral salutations at the Ugha-Ozolua axis, followed by a royal procession to the palace entrance where the main ritual took place. Oba Ewuare II offered prayers to God and the royal ancestors, while traditional warriors and Ifiento groups added colour and pageantry to the event.
The Oba’s striking of the royal drums and ivory gong drew loud cheers and praises from the crowd. The outdoor ceremony concluded with special prayers to ward off evil spirits, followed by a dramatic return procession to the palace courtyard.
