NMA declares zero tolerance for quack doctors in Ogun

The Ogun State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has reiterated its resolve to intensify the fight against medical quackery and unethical practices within the state’s healthcare sector.

The association’s chairman, Dr. Opeoluwa Ogunjimi, stated this on Thursday during a news conference held in Abeokuta as part of activities marking the 2025 Physicians’ Week.

Ogunjimi noted that the association had developed new strategies to strengthen its monitoring committee on quackery and ensure greater compliance with professional standards.

He stressed that the support of the state government was essential to achieving lasting results in the fight against fake medical practitioners.

“Quackery has existed for a long time, but with government support, we can reactivate our monitoring committee and deal with it decisively,” he said.

He also urged community leaders to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals posing as medical doctors. “If you notice someone pretending to be a doctor, report to the government or NMA so that immediate action can be taken,” he added.

Ogunjimi appealed to the federal government to improve doctors’ remuneration, address economic challenges, and ensure a safer working environment for medical professionals.

He explained that this year’s Physicians’ Week provided an opportunity to reflect on both the challenges confronting the medical profession and its collective progress.

The 2025 Physicians’ Week, themed “Healthcare as a Value Chain: Building Efficiency from Policy to Patient,” highlights the importance of collaboration and effective policy implementation in strengthening healthcare delivery nationwide.

Dr. Ogunjimi reaffirmed the NMA’s commitment to upholding professional ethics and ensuring that patients in Ogun State receive quality healthcare from qualified practitioners.
