NiDO America urges Trump to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, strengthen partnership

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation–Americas (NiDOA) has urged the United States to engage in constructive partnership with Nigeria on matters of security and crime prevention rather than take actions that could undermine the country’s sovereignty.

The Continental Chair of NiDOA, Dr. Victor Ubani, stated this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

His remarks followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as “a country of particular concern,” along with threats of possible military intervention over alleged failures to protect Christians.

Ubani advised the Federal Government to adopt a comprehensive diplomatic approach to address the U.S. concerns through dialogue, transparency, and active engagement with relevant stakeholders.

“Although there are mixed reactions to Nigeria’s designation by President Trump, we urge the Federal Government to pursue all diplomatic channels to ensure a peaceful resolution,” he said.

He added that while the U.S. concerns about security in Nigeria are valid, the nation remains capable of overcoming its challenges through unity and effective governance.

Ubani called on authorities to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity by ensuring that perpetrators of violence face justice, while encouraging citizens to maintain calm and avoid actions that could disrupt peace.

“This is a time for unity and collective responsibility, not division,” he said. “Together, we can rebrand Nigeria’s image, promote peace, and change negative global perceptions about our country.”

He reaffirmed NiDOA’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government and Nigerians everywhere in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and strengthening its global standing.

Ubani concluded that true progress and stability could only be achieved through collaboration among Nigerians at home and abroad.
