The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded a significant increase in traffic enforcement activities, arresting no fewer than 581,332 motorists for committing 648,918 traffic offences across the country in 2025.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a press conference.
Mohammed said the figures represented a notable rise compared to 2024, attributing the increase to intensified patrol operations, improved surveillance and stronger enforcement strategies.
According to him, the number of offenders arrested rose from 453,304 in 2024 to 581,332 in 2025, an increase of 128,028 arrests, representing a 28.3 per cent rise.
He added that recorded traffic offences also increased from 496,799 in 2024 to 648,918 in 2025, showing an increase of 152,119 cases or 30.6 per cent.
“This upward trend reflects intensified patrol operations, improved surveillance and a more robust enforcement strategy aimed at promoting road discipline and enhancing overall safety on Nigerian roads,” he said.
Speaking on the 2025/2026 Operation Zero Tolerance exercise, the Corps Marshal said the FRSC arrested 29,317 traffic offenders for 33,190 offences nationwide during the operation.
He explained that the arrests were made between Dec. 15, 2025, and Jan. 15, 2026.
Mohammed noted that offenders apprehended during the operation increased from 28,170 in the 2024/2025 exercise to 29,317 in the 2025/2026 period, representing a four per cent rise.
Similarly, he said recorded offences increased from 31,829 to 33,190, marking a 4.2 per cent increase.
“In response to this trend, the corps intensified deterrence measures through nationwide mobile court operations,” he said.
He disclosed that the mobile courts led to the arraignment of 1,276 offenders, with 1,105 convicted, while 171 persons were lawfully discharged or acquitted.
Mohammed said the approach reflected the corps’ commitment to firm, fair and visible enforcement as a tool for behavioural change and improved road safety nationwide.
