Fire destroys property at Ikeja Computer Village

A late-night fire outbreak has severely damaged a commercial building occupied by computer dealers at the popular Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the fire affected the upper floor of a one-storey structure used mainly for the storage and sale of computers and accessories.

According to the agency, emergency calls were received shortly before 2:00 a.m., prompting the activation of the state’s emergency response protocol from the Command and Control Centre in Alausa.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene within minutes and encountered intense flames and heavy smoke spreading across the upper level of the building.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, explained that the presence of highly flammable materials within the premises accelerated the spread of the fire.

He said investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Although no fatalities were recorded, one firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation and received immediate medical attention from the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

The blaze completely destroyed the upper floor of the building, with computers, accessories and other valuable items estimated to be worth millions of naira lost.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that parts of the structure were weakened by the fire and would require urgent assessment to determine its safety.

He noted that responders cordoned off the area and put safety measures in place to protect nearby buildings, successfully stopping the fire from spreading further.

The fire was eventually brought under control, while follow-up cooling operations continued to prevent a recurrence.

The LASEMA chief advised operators of commercial premises to comply strictly with fire safety regulations and proper storage practices to reduce risks.

Emergency response at the scene involved LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Nigeria Police Force.
