Battle for 2027: Ex-Dep. Gov. Declares Bid to Oust Governor Yusuf

The New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed former Kano State Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Aminu-Gwarzo, as its flag bearer for the 2027 governorship election.

The declaration was made during the party’s primary election held on Friday in Kano, with the Chairman of the Primaries Committee from the national secretariat, Mainasara Abubakar-Sani, announcing the outcome.

Abubakar-Sani praised party leaders and stakeholders for their cooperation throughout the process, noting that their support contributed to a smooth and orderly exercise. He also expressed confidence that the party would perform strongly in the forthcoming general elections.

In his acceptance speech, Aminu-Gwarzo declared his intention to defeat Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf, stating that the political contest for the state’s top seat had effectively begun.

He said the current administration would be limited to a single term, adding that the race for the governorship had become a direct political contest between both sides.

The former deputy governor, who later defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC), also criticised political betrayal, warning that those involved would face consequences.

He promised to run an administration focused on the welfare of residents and pledged to address the challenges facing citizens across the state.

Party leader, Rabiu Musa-Kwankwaso, commended the smooth conduct of the primaries, describing the process as transparent and well-coordinated. He expressed optimism about the party’s unity and electoral prospects ahead of 2027.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, party representatives and media practitioners were present to observe the exercise.
