The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) marked the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child by leading a symbolic walk of 200 girls to the Bauchi State Government House.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the International Day of the Girl Child was declared by the United Nations to promote global awareness of gender inequality.
The day also supports increasing opportunities for girls in key areas such as education, health, and leadership.
AGILE State Project Coordinator, Hajiya Ladi Muhammad, speaking before the walk on Friday in Bauchi, said the initiative had significantly increased girls’ enrolment in schools since its inception, especially through education-based incentives.
She noted that the 2025 celebration highlighted how education enabled girls not just to overcome adversity, but to lead recovery and transformation in their homes and communities.
Muhammad said the event also aimed to promote inclusive education for all girls, including those out of school and girls living with disabilities across Bauchi State.
She added that AGILE fostered leadership by equipping girls with digital literacy, life skills, and climate action training to strengthen their roles as future change-makers.
The event also created space for dialogue between girls, policymakers, and stakeholders, helping to amplify their voices and promote community-based solutions to gender inequality.
According to her, the celebration raised awareness about AGILE’s Conditional Cash Transfer and Life Skills programmes that enhance educational access and resilience among girls and families.
She stressed that educated, empowered girls were more likely to become active agents of change, driving progress and promoting stability in society and beyond.
Also speaking, Dr Mohammed Lawal, Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, affirmed the government’s commitment to the education and welfare of girls across the state.
He said AGILE’s Conditional Cash Transfer system had successfully boosted enrolment by encouraging more families to send their daughters to school, especially in underserved areas.
Lawal assured that the government would continue to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment to help every girl realise her full potential through quality education.
