Maiduguri Bombings Claim 23 Lives, Injure 108 — Police

Authorities in Borno State have confirmed that multiple explosions in Maiduguri left 23 people dead and 108 others injured.

The Police Command disclosed that the attacks, which occurred on Monday evening, were allegedly carried out by suspected suicide bombers around 7:24 p.m.

According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, preliminary findings showed that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were used in the coordinated attacks.

He explained that the blasts occurred at key locations, including the Maiduguri Central Market, widely known as Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover area.

Daso said security agencies, comprising police tactical units, military personnel and other operatives, were immediately deployed to the affected sites.

He added that the areas were secured and sealed off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team conducted thorough sweeps to rule out further threats.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, also visited the locations to assess the situation and sympathise with victims and their families.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Daso noted that calm had returned to the affected areas, while security presence had been reinforced across the city to prevent further incidents.

He urged residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies, assuring the public of continued efforts to protect lives and maintain order in the state.
