A nationwide environmental drive to combat plastic waste and improve sanitation is set to launch on April 25, bringing together communities, institutions, and partners across Nigeria.
The campaign, known as “The Great Nigeria Cleanup,” is spearheaded by Sterling Bank in collaboration with Sterling One Foundation and other stakeholders. It will be implemented across all six geopolitical zones, encouraging grassroots participation in coordinated clean-up activities.
States expected to take part include Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Osun, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Sokoto, Kano, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, and Katsina.
According to the organisers, the initiative supports international sustainability goals outlined under the United Nations Decade of Action, while also promoting shared responsibility in addressing environmental issues across the country.
Sterling Bank’s Chief Operating Officer, Temitayo Adegoke, said the programme demonstrates the bank’s dedication to environmental sustainability and collective action. He added that it aims to inspire individuals to take greater responsibility for their surroundings and build a culture of environmental care.
In a similar vein, Olapeju Ibekwe, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, explained that the effort extends beyond sanitation by encouraging public health awareness, community wellbeing, and shared accountability. She noted that it is designed to empower citizens to actively contribute to sustainable development.
Organisers further explained that the campaign responds to rising concerns about waste management and urban pollution. It is expected to unite government bodies, private organisations, and local communities in pursuit of lasting environmental improvements.
Citizens across the country are encouraged to take part in the clean-up activities as part of broader efforts to create a cleaner and healthier environment.
Sterling Bank operates as a national commercial institution under Sterling Financial Holdings Group, while Sterling One Foundation focuses on impact-driven initiatives in health, education, climate action, and food security.
