Rampaging Elephant Enters Oyo Community, Leaves One Dead and Another Missing

Tragedy struck a rural community in Oyo State on Thursday after a wild elephant attack claimed one life and left another person unaccounted for.

The incident occurred in Innayin Community near Iwere-Ile in Iwajowa Local Government Area, where a 45-year-old man, Ibrahim Tijani, was killed during the encounter. Another resident, identified as Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, is believed to have gone missing after coming into contact with the same animal.

The development was confirmed by the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, in a statement issued in Ibadan on Friday. He explained that the attack took place at about 3:30 p.m., prompting a joint response involving police officers, local hunters, and forest rangers from the National Park Service.

Upon reaching the scene, security operatives reportedly found Tijani’s body in a nearby bush, bearing injuries consistent with a wild animal attack. His remains were subsequently moved to the General Hospital in Iwere-Ile for examination and preservation.

Search operations are ongoing to locate Bingin, who was last seen after encountering the elephant. Authorities say efforts to find him have been intensified.

Residents of Innayin and surrounding communities have been advised to stay away from the affected area and immediately report any sightings of the animal to security agencies. Officials also noted that steps have been taken to safeguard the community and prevent further incidents.

Authorities emphasized the need to handle the situation carefully, in line with wildlife conservation regulations, while engaging experts from the National Park Service to manage the threat effectively.

Security agencies reassured residents that personnel are actively working with relevant stakeholders to restore safety and prevent additional casualties, urging the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with ongoing operations.
