Spotify celebrates Afrobeats’ worldwide rise with fresh playlist release

Spotify has introduced a new playlist, the ‘Global Afrobeats Playlist’, designed to showcase the genre’s growing dominance on the world stage.

In a statement released on Thursday, the streaming giant described Afrobeats as a sound that has transcended clubs and charts to influence fashion, dance, and culture worldwide.

The platform credited fans for fueling the genre’s global spread, particularly noting explosive growth in Asia, where Afrobeats streams have skyrocketed. Spotify reported that between 2020 and 2025, streams rose by 4,530% in Indonesia, 1,650% in India, 1,492% in the Philippines, and 1,370% in Thailand.

Latin America has also embraced the sound, with a 183% year-on-year increase in streams in 2025. Additionally, user-generated playlists featuring Afrobeats have grown by 135% in the same five-year period, reflecting how listeners are not only consuming but also curating and spreading the music globally.

Spotify highlighted that Gen Z listeners play a central role in this movement, turning playlists into discovery hubs. Popular playlists such as Hot Hits Naija, African Heat, and Gbedu have become international entry points for Afrobeats, with Hot Hits Naija alone racking up more than 20 million global streams. In Nigeria, the genre’s birthplace, playlists like Hot Hits Naija, Gbedu, and Street Energy continue to mirror the street-inspired creativity of its youth culture.

Speaking on the launch, Benewaah Boateng, Spotify’s Senior Music Editor for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the playlist reflects fan-led growth rather than a platform-driven push.

“This isn’t about Spotify taking the lead—it’s about following the fans. The Global Afrobeats Playlist is a tribute to those who built the movement from the ground up and a signal that Afrobeats is only going higher,” she said.
