Vice-President Kashim Shettima has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government’s tax reform agenda is aimed at easing economic hardship and creating a fairer system for businesses and low-income earners.
Shettima delivered the message on behalf of President Bola Tinubu during an interfaith Iftar and Lent gathering at the State House in Abuja, attended by members of the Federal Executive Council, the Governor of the Central Bank, and other top government officials.
He explained that the proposed reforms are designed to end the problem of multiple taxation, particularly for small businesses, while also shielding low-income earners from excessive tax obligations.
According to him, the reforms were thoughtfully crafted to enhance living standards and stimulate inclusive economic growth.
Responding to criticisms that the measures would worsen the plight of the poor, Shettima dismissed such claims as inaccurate and urged public officials to clarify misconceptions.
“We must engage citizens directly and explain the true intent of these policies,” he said, stressing the need for proper public enlightenment.
The Vice-President also pointed to what he described as positive outcomes from broader economic reforms, including improved foreign exchange reserves and efforts to unify exchange rates.
He referenced the removal of fuel subsidy, noting that it had previously benefited only a limited segment of the population.
Shettima commended the president for confronting structural economic challenges that had persisted for years.
He called on government representatives to actively communicate the administration’s progress and remain resolute in addressing misinformation from political opponents.
