The Police Command in Niger State has recovered a suspected military unexploded ordnance (UXO) device in Zugurma community, Mashegu Local Government Area.
The state police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the recovery followed a report from the Divisional Police Officer of Ibbi Division, after residents spotted an object resembling a missile in a nearby forest.
Police operatives promptly cordoned off the area, ensuring residents’ safety, while the state Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, directed deployment of personnel to the scene.
The command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit, led by CSP Mohammed Mamun, arrived at the site on Tuesday. Operatives, guided by community members, located and safely recovered the device, transferring it to the State Police Headquarters in Minna.
Abiodun confirmed the device was a UXO missile or military unexploded ordnance, though its source remains under investigation. He assured that further inquiries are ongoing and pledged to provide updates as necessary.
The Commissioner of Police also urged the public to remain calm, assuring that all security agencies are working to maintain safety and restore normalcy in the affected area.
