Playoffs: Ebonyi sports commissioner, others advise Eagles against complacency

As Nigeria’s Super Eagles gear up for the upcoming FIFA World Cup playoffs in November, stakeholders and fans have cautioned the team against complacency despite their recent dominant victory over Benin Republic.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Richard Idike, emphasized the need for continued focus and determination. He noted that while the 4-0 win against Benin Republic in Uyo boosted national morale, the team must remember that their playoff opponents will be equally determined to secure a spot at the global tournament.

“The players must carry the same intensity and hunger they showed against Benin into the playoffs,” Idike said. “That level of urgency must be consistent if we are to book our ticket to the World Cup.”

He also called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to take proactive measures in preparing the team, especially given the anxiety that followed Nigeria’s performance in the qualifiers.

Ikenna Odo, a member of the Ebonyi Football Association, echoed similar sentiments, warning that the road to qualification remains challenging. He pointed out that minor errors during earlier matches cost the Super Eagles an automatic qualification and stressed that such lapses must be avoided going forward.

“The playoffs are a huge opportunity, but we must not underestimate our opponents. Even winning the African playoffs doesn’t guarantee a World Cup spot—we’ll still have to face other nations in the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026,” he explained.

Chief Barry Obiekwe, a football enthusiast and transporter, criticized the lack of technical consistency during the qualifiers, noting that four different coaches handled the team over the course of just ten matches. “Such instability only disrupts the team’s cohesion. The NFF must learn from this,” he stated.

Mrs. Ogechukwu Onuoha, a teacher and passionate supporter of the national team, highlighted the emotional investment Nigerians have in World Cup qualification. She urged fans to continue supporting the team through prayers and positive energy.

“Had we not made it to the playoffs, the disappointment across the country would have been immense. The players must now stay fit, focused, and fully committed to avoiding another heartbreak,” she added.

With the nation’s eyes firmly fixed on the Super Eagles, the pressure is on to deliver consistent performances and secure Nigeria’s place on football’s biggest stage.
