Oba Ewuare II Performs Ugierhoba Rite to Officially Open 2025 Igue Festival

The Oba of Benin, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, on Monday performed the ancient Ugierhoba rite, formally inaugurating the 2025 Igue festival at the sacred Ugharhoba axis of the Benin Palace. The ceremony highlighted the continuity between ancestral traditions and contemporary Benin life.

According to Chief Press Secretary Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Ugierhoba represents sacred altars honoring Oba Ewuare’s forebears, venerated during Igue, also known as “Ugie”. During the rite, the Oba engaged in solitary introspection and prayers, with intercessory groups praying for his guidance, family wellbeing, the kingdom, and Nigeria.

The proceedings began with a solemn procession after the Oba paid tribute to royal ancestors at Ugha-Ozolua, following established ancient traditions. Chiefs including Ihogbe, Ehondor, Ifiento, and Ewaise presented stewardship accounts, and ritual animal sacrifices were conducted in accordance with tradition.

Iguobaro emphasized that the rite binds past and present, renewing spiritual bonds that sustain Benin’s heritage. The Oba, accompanied by his children and royal family, energized palace attendees, his confident presence complementing the rhythm of the traditional orchestra.
