NLC calls for proactive measures to drive 2026 progress

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on all levels of government to adopt proactive policies that promote accountability, social justice, security, and improved welfare for citizens in 2026.

Funmi Sesi, chairperson of the Lagos chapter of NLC, shared the recommendations on Wednesday, emphasising the need for deliberate actions to enhance the wellbeing of workers and the general public.

She highlighted that sustained measures to improve the welfare of Nigerians would help ease the burden on both workers and citizens in the coming year.

Sesi urged governments to take proactive steps to address insecurity across the country, safeguarding lives and property while ensuring uninterrupted economic activities.

On social justice, she stressed the importance of expanding access to quality healthcare and education, calling for increased budgetary allocations to these critical sectors alongside security.

She also addressed tax fairness, encouraging policies that avoid placing undue burden on lower-income citizens.

Looking ahead to 2026, Sesi noted that workers expect a reduction in the cost of essential goods and services, particularly food items, which can be supported through increased backing for farmers and agricultural production.

She added that the upcoming review of the minimum wage should be conducted fairly, ensuring it reflects the real living standards of workers.

The NLC also emphasised the importance of a secure nation with affordable basic amenities, highlighting that access to such services directly uplifts living standards.

Sesi concluded by stressing that the rights, freedoms, and happiness of citizens should be prioritised as part of broader efforts to curb migration and foster social stability.
