NiMet Predicts Dust Haze, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast dust haze and cloudy conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted slight dust haze over the northern region on Monday, with moderate dust haze expected in parts of Borno and Yobe, reducing horizontal visibility to between 2km and 5km.

The North Central region is also expected to experience slight dust haze throughout the period.

For the southern region, NiMet projected a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine and slim chances of morning thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rains are anticipated in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom.

On Tuesday, moderate dust haze with visibility ranging from 2km to 5km is expected across the northern region, while slight dust haze will persist over the North Central zone. Southern states may experience morning thunderstorms in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, with light rains later in Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom.

By Wednesday, thick dust haze is forecast over both the northern and North Central regions. The southern region will remain cloudy with possible morning thunderstorms in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, followed by light rains in Bayelsa, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom later in the day.

NiMet advised residents, especially those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, to take necessary precautions due to suspended dust particles. It also urged motorists to exercise caution during rainfall and advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency for effective flight planning.
