The Nigerian Navy has arrested two suspects, including an alleged leader of a pipeline vandalism network, in Bayelsa State as part of ongoing efforts to curb crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.
Details of the operation were disclosed by naval authorities, who said the arrests were made by personnel of the Forward Operating Base FORMOSO during a targeted raid in Egbama-Angalabiri, located in Ekeremo Local Government Area.
The main suspect, identified as Godwin and widely known by the nickname “Idiot,” was reportedly apprehended at a local night market where he was allegedly collecting illegal levies from traders.
Security intelligence had previously linked him to a well-known pipeline vandalism group operating around the Clough Creek area, believed to be responsible for repeated attacks on oil facilities.
During a subsequent search of his residence, naval personnel encountered armed resistance from suspected gang members but were able to repel the attackers.
Items recovered from the premises included communication devices and other equipment believed to have been used in illicit activities.
Further intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of another suspect, identified as Happiness, who is believed to be connected to the network. A pump-action firearm was also recovered.
Both individuals have been transferred to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Authorities say operations against oil theft and related crimes will continue, warning those involved in such activities to desist or face enforcement action.
