Stakeholders in Nigeria’s environmental sector have been assured that key resolutions will emerge to strengthen policy direction and promote environmental sustainability across the country.
The assurance was given on Tuesday in Katsina by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Adam-Kambari, at the opening of the Technical Session of the 18th National Council on Environment (NCE).
Adam-Kambari described the council as the highest policy-making body on environmental matters in Nigeria, noting that it provides a critical platform for stakeholders to review progress, address emerging challenges and adopt resolutions that shape national environmental policy.
According to him, deliberations at the council are expected to drive coordinated action towards a safer and more sustainable environment for all Nigerians.
He said the 2025 theme, “Tackling the Triple Planetary Crisis of Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Pollution for Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” underscored the urgent need for collective action to confront environmental challenges.
The permanent secretary stressed that climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution posed serious threats to ecosystems, food security, public health and Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.
Adam-Kambari commended the Katsina State Government and its people for their hospitality and strong partnership, while also praising the Minister of Environment for his leadership. He acknowledged the contributions of state commissioners, development partners and other stakeholders toward advancing environmental sustainability.
Earlier, the Katsina State Head of Service and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Falalu Bawale, welcomed participants and described their presence as a demonstration of shared commitment to environmental protection.
Bawale said the council provided an opportunity to deepen professional collaboration and deploy expertise for effective environmental management. He thanked the Federal Ministry of Environment for selecting Katsina State to host the national forum and reaffirmed that the NCE remained Nigeria’s most strategic environmental policy organ, offering states access to best practices in environmental resilience and climate change adaptation.
