Army hosts Christmas luncheon for wounded soldiers in Kaduna

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday hosted a Christmas luncheon in honour of sick and wounded-in-action (WIA) soldiers at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.

The event, held in the spirit of the festive season, was organised to appreciate wounded soldiers and the medical personnel supporting their recovery, in line with the “Soldier First Concept” of the COAS’ command philosophy. Shaibu was represented at the event by the Chief of Staff, 1 Division Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Timothy Opurum.

Speaking at the luncheon, the COAS described the wounded soldiers as heroes who embodied courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment to the unity and security of the nation.

“Our WIA troops represent the very best of the Nigerian spirit: bravery in the face of danger, loyalty to duty and dedication to national service. You are neither forgotten nor abandoned, but deeply valued,” he said.

Shaibu also acknowledged the families of the wounded soldiers and reassured the personnel of the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to their welfare and well-being.

He prayed that Christmas would bring comfort to recovering soldiers, peace to their families and renewed strength to caregivers, expressing hope that the New Year would usher in improved health, lasting recovery and greater national unity.

Earlier, the Acting Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Brig.-Gen. Godwin Ogoh, described Christmas as a season of hope and sacrifice, reflecting the courage and selflessness of wounded soldiers who had defended the nation.

“We are profoundly grateful for your commitment to serving our nation, and it is our privilege and responsibility to provide you with exceptional care during your recovery,” Ogoh said.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 1 Division Chapter, Dr Halima Tafida-Wase, presented gifts to the wounded-in-action personnel and assured them of the association’s continued support.

She said the occasion was more than a ceremonial gathering, describing it as a moment of reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment to service.
