Zapopan, Mexico, June 24, 2026 – Colombia boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging DR Congo 1-0 in a fiercely contested Group K encounter at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.
The South Americans secured all three points thanks to a decisive strike from Daniel Muñoz in the 76th minute of the match.
Both sides displayed discipline and resilience throughout the contest, resulting in a balanced affair for long periods. While Colombia controlled more of the ball and posed the greater attacking threat, DR Congo remained compact at the back and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Neither team managed to break the deadlock before halftime, with clear-cut opportunities proving scarce despite several attacking moves.
Colombia continued to probe after the restart, with Juan Quintero playing a key role in orchestrating attacks. However, DR Congo’s defence stood firm and repeatedly repelled the pressure.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 76th minute when Quintero threaded a well-weighted pass into the path of Muñoz, who calmly converted to hand Colombia the lead.
The goal sparked a response from the Congolese side, who pushed forward aggressively in search of an equaliser. Despite their determination and increased attacking intent, Colombia remained organised defensively and successfully preserved their advantage until full time.
The contest was also marked by several physical exchanges. Colombia’s Jhon Lucumí and Jefferson Lerma, along with DR Congo’s Charles Pickel, were cautioned by the referee for separate incidents during the game.
The victory significantly improves Colombia’s chances of progressing from Group K, while DR Congo now face increased pressure to secure a favourable result in their final group fixture to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Colombia’s next assignment is a crucial clash against Portugal on June 27, while DR Congo will face Uzbekistan on the same day.
With the result, Colombia strengthened their standing in the group and moved a step closer to the next round, leaving DR Congo needing a strong finish to their group-stage campaign.
