NAWOJ Condemns Oyo School Kidnap, Demands Urgent Rescue of Victims

Benin, June 4, 2026 – The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State chapter, has strongly condemned the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, calling for their immediate and safe rescue.

The position was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Benin by the state Chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs Habiba Sam.

Sam described the incident as distressing, noting that it had caused deep pain and anxiety for families, communities, and Nigerians at large.

She said children and educators are expected to be protected within school environments, which should serve as safe spaces for learning and development.

According to her, the continued captivity of innocent pupils and teachers poses a serious threat to the country’s education system and the safety of learners nationwide.

“As mothers, journalists, and advocates for women and children, we share in the anguish being experienced by parents, guardians, and loved ones of the victims,” she said.

NAWOJ called on the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, and security agencies to deploy all necessary resources and intelligence to ensure the safe and immediate release of those abducted.

Sam stressed that the safety of children must remain a national priority, urging security agencies to intensify coordinated and sustained rescue operations to bring the victims home safely and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

She also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders to join in efforts aimed at securing the release of the victims.

The association further urged government authorities to provide support and comfort to the affected families during this difficult period.

NAWOJ also made a direct appeal to the abductors to release the victims unharmed, insisting that no justification exists for the suffering inflicted on innocent children and their teachers.

Sam reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advocating for the protection of children, the security of schools, and the right of every child to learn in a safe environment.

“Our position remains firm: the abducted pupils and teachers must be released immediately and unconditionally,” she added.

The incident occurred on May 15, when armed men attacked three schools—Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State—abducting pupils and teachers.

The attack has continued to generate widespread concern and condemnation across the country.
