Abuja, May 11, 2026 The Federal Government has reiterated its resolve to ensure that admissions into tertiary institutions across the country remain transparent, inclusive and strictly based on merit.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, made the statement on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The gathering also featured the sixth edition of the National Tertiary Admissions Performance-Merit (NATAP-M) Awards.
Ahmad praised JAMB for consistently organising the annual policy meeting, describing it as an important avenue for promoting fairness, accountability and openness in the nation’s admission process.
She noted that the meeting serves as a platform for education stakeholders to review admission procedures, institutional capacities, quality assurance measures and equal access to higher education.
According to the minister, the discussions demonstrate a shared commitment to building a credible admission framework that supports national development goals while ensuring inclusiveness and merit.
She stressed that efforts to expand access to tertiary education must go hand in hand with maintaining academic standards, integrity and fairness in admissions.
Ahmad also said the ministry would continue backing reforms aimed at improving transparency and efficiency while guaranteeing equal educational opportunities for students, irrespective of gender, social background or location.
She highlighted the role of technology and innovation in reducing irregularities in the admission process and improving overall operations within the education sector.
The minister further disclosed that the ministry, in collaboration with relevant regulatory agencies, is working to strengthen teacher education and enable colleges of education to award degree qualifications. She explained that the move is expected to enhance teacher training and create broader academic opportunities for students nationwide.
Ahmad commended the management and staff of JAMB for introducing reforms and technological advancements that have boosted confidence in the country’s admission system.
She also congratulated recipients of the NATAP-M awards and encouraged institutions to maintain high standards and strict compliance with admission guidelines.
