Man Tells Court He Can Only Afford ₦5,000 for Feeding His Two Children

Mararaba, Nasarawa State, May 12, 2026 A civil servant, Hassan Isah, has informed an Upper Area Court in Mararaba that he is only able to provide ₦5,000 monthly for the upkeep of his two children amid an ongoing custody and maintenance case.

Isah, who lives in Angwan Albarka near Mama Dele Junction in Karu Local Government Area, made the statement after the presiding judge, Malam Mohammed Yakubu, questioned the adequacy of the proposed amount for child support.

He told the court that even ₦10,000 would be difficult for him to manage, citing multiple financial obligations, including supporting another child outside marriage, assisting his mother, paying siblings’ school fees and servicing outstanding debts.

He also explained that he had suggested alternative care arrangements, stating that a relative could assist in looking after the children while he works.

His wife, Jamila Rabiu, had earlier asked the court to order a monthly maintenance payment of ₦100,000, in addition to covering the children’s education and medical expenses.

After reviewing the submissions, the judge ordered Isah to pay ₦20,000 monthly as feeding allowance for the two children, separate from costs relating to schooling, healthcare and clothing.

Court records show that Rabiu initiated divorce proceedings on February 11, 2026, seeking dissolution of the marriage under Khul’i in line with Islamic legal provisions, along with custody of her children.

She alleged that the marriage, which was contracted on April 8, 2017, had broken down due to domestic violence and a lack of adherence to Islamic principles by her husband.

Rabiu told the court she no longer wished to remain in the union and expressed willingness to refund the ₦40,000 dowry paid at the time of marriage in order to secure the dissolution under Khul’i.

The court later granted the dissolution of the marriage on April 28, 2026, in accordance with Islamic law.
