LOTUS Bank, in collaboration with Heckerbella, has rolled out an innovative Smart ID initiative at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), introducing a unified system that combines campus identification with secure digital payment functionality.
The launch event brought together members of the university management, faculty, students, executives of both organisations, and other stakeholders.
The Managing Director of LOTUS Bank, Dr Isiaka Ajani-Lawal, said the project underscored the bank’s dedication to expanding financial inclusion while delivering secure, technology-driven banking solutions designed for institutional environments.
He explained that the Smart ID platform integrates identity management, access control and banking services into a single, secure framework, making daily activities more convenient and strengthening campus security.
Ajani-Lawal noted that the card would function as both an official university ID and a debit card, enabling easy verification, controlled access to facilities and safe cashless transactions on and off campus.
According to him, the initiative is expected to simplify administrative processes, boost efficiency across academic units and promote financial literacy among students, while supporting UNILAG’s drive toward a digitally enabled academic community.
As the project’s technology partner, Heckerbella is overseeing data capture for staff and students, as well as the production and distribution of the cards, ensuring accuracy, security and smooth implementation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, formally presented the first batch of Smart ID Cards to members of the university community, describing the project as a major step in UNILAG’s digital transformation and a reflection of its commitment to innovation and strategic collaboration.
In her remarks, the Managing Director of Heckerbella, Ms Yemi Keri, stressed the growing importance of secure identity systems in modern institutions, adding that the partnership illustrated how technology, finance and education could work together to deliver forward-looking solutions.
