Lagos Set to Host 2026 Tojemarine International Handball Championship

Preparations are underway for the 2026 Tojemarine Invitational International Handball Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Lagos from July 16 to July 25.

The tournament, themed “Building Champions, Inspiring Communities,” is expected to attract leading handball talents from Nigeria and neighbouring countries in what organisers describe as a major platform for competition and development.

Speaking on the forthcoming championship, Handball Federation of Nigeria board member, Cosmos Chukwuemeka, said clubs and handball enthusiasts from across the region were expected to participate in the event.

He explained that the championship would not only promote healthy competition but also encourage sportsmanship and community development through handball.

Chukwuemeka noted that the competition, previously known as the Samuel Ocheho Invitational International Handball Championship, would be held at the NIS Indoor Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, as well as the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex and Rowe Park Sports Centre in Yaba, Lagos.

According to him, the tournament is aimed at giving athletes an opportunity to showcase their abilities while also promoting youth engagement, teamwork, discipline and the continued growth of handball in Nigeria.

Former President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria and Chief Organiser of the competition, Samuel Ocheho, also expressed optimism about the championship, describing it as an avenue to further develop sports and empower young people.

Ocheho said the tournament was expected to deliver high-level competition and entertainment while creating opportunities for emerging talents to thrive in the sport.

“Handball has opened doors for many young people by giving them discipline, opportunities and purpose.

“This championship is part of our contribution to the growth of the game and another platform for talents to develop,” he said.

He added that the initiative goes beyond winning trophies, stressing that the broader objective is to inspire future generations of athletes.

“We are determined to build champions and positively impact communities through sports.

“Our mission is to create an atmosphere where athletes can compete, improve themselves and aim higher,” Ocheho added.

Organisers also appealed to sports stakeholders, corporate organisations and fans to support the initiative, which they believe is gradually becoming one of Nigeria’s notable handball tournaments.

The championship is expected to feature 10 days of intense matches, talent discovery and entertainment, while fans will also be able to follow activities and updates through the club’s digital platforms.
