A new set of commercial buses has been introduced in Kebbi State as part of efforts to improve mobility and reduce transportation difficulties for residents.
The state government on Thursday rolled out 50 Toyota 18-seater buses to operate on various routes nationwide. The vehicles were officially presented at a newly renovated motor park in Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking at the event, political leader Alhaji Umar Faruk-Buro explained that the initiative is designed to serve the general public and will soon begin operations, benefiting residents irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious background.
He addressed criticisms suggesting the buses were intended for political purposes, dismissing such claims and emphasizing that the project is focused on supporting transport unions, drivers, and commuters across the state.
Faruk-Buro also urged drivers to maintain integrity, fairness, and professionalism in their duties to ensure consistent and reliable service. He further advised transport unions to work closely with security agencies, stressing the importance of checking passengers’ luggage before departure.
Additionally, he cautioned drivers against picking up passengers outside designated motor parks, noting that such practices could pose safety risks.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Bala Muhammad-Gagga, described the occasion as significant for Kebbi residents. He praised the upgraded motor park, noting that it ranks among the best in the country.
He commended Governor Nasir Idris for providing the buses and encouraged beneficiaries to use both the vehicles and the facility responsibly for the overall benefit of the state.
Authorities also indicated that fares for the new buses will be subsidised, making them more affordable compared to services offered by private transport operators, with the goal of easing the financial burden on commuters.
