Kebbi Committee Begins Town Hall Meetings to Address Unstable Electricity Supply from KEDCO

A stakeholder investigation committee in Kebbi State has begun a series of town hall engagements to identify the causes of irregular electricity supply linked to the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and propose lasting solutions.

The initiative was set up by the state government to assess persistent power challenges and recommend practical measures to improve electricity delivery across the state.

The panel includes government representatives, civil society organisations, labour unions, artisans, and officials of KEDCO. It is currently holding consultations across the four emirates of Gwandu, Argungu, Yauri, and Zuru.

Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Usman Abubakar-Gwandu, said during separate sessions in Yauri and Zuru that the team had already visited three emirates to engage traditional rulers, residents, and electricity officials on the situation.

He explained that the committee was mandated by Governor Nasir Idris to investigate the causes of persistent power outages and recommend sustainable measures that would ensure improved electricity supply for residents.

According to him, discussions with key stakeholders and KEDCO representatives will continue in order to clearly identify the challenges and chart a workable path forward.

Traditional leaders in Yauri and Zuru expressed concern over the poor power supply, alleging negligence and inefficiency by KEDCO staff. They attributed a significant portion of the problem to the company’s operations.

The Emir of Zuru, speaking through a representative, called for a structured electricity development plan that would provide a long-term framework for resolving the crisis.

Residents and community members also criticised issues such as inconsistent supply, estimated billing practices, and delays in replacing faulty infrastructure. They argued that earlier systems provided more direct support in maintaining electricity infrastructure compared to the current arrangement.

Security officials at the meeting urged residents to protect public electricity installations and other critical infrastructure in their communities.

In response, a representative of KEDCO in Yauri assured participants that all complaints and concerns raised would be documented and forwarded to the company’s management for further action.
