Kano Govt Approves Recruitment of More Mathematics Teachers

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved the employment of additional Mathematics teachers to be deployed across secondary schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, disclosed this on Wednesday during the distribution of admission letters to newly admitted SS1 students at Maryam Aloma Girls’ Secondary School, Kano.

Makoda explained that the move was aimed at tackling the shortage of qualified Mathematics teachers in schools, stressing that the initiative reflects the government’s drive to provide free and quality education while encouraging community participation in the sector.

He highlighted other reforms introduced under Yusuf’s administration, including the recruitment of more teachers, renovation of schools, and provision of learning materials, noting that these efforts contributed to Kano’s emergence as the best-performing state in the 2025 NECO examinations.

“The governor is making deliberate efforts to strengthen education in Kano. Approving the recruitment of new Mathematics teachers is one of the steps to address existing gaps,” he said.

The commissioner also appealed to parents to complement government efforts by enrolling their children in schools and ensuring they pursue quality education.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, Rabi’u Gwarzo, described Kano’s first-ever top position in NECO rankings as a product of Yusuf’s commitment to raising academic standards. He called for stronger collaboration between the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, and the Educational Resources Department.

The Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Alhaji Dahiru Salisu, and the State Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), Alhaji Tijjani Baraya, both commended the government’s reforms. They urged parents and civil society organizations to continue supporting education initiatives in the state.

The event was attended by zonal directors, senior officials of the Ministry of Education, SUBEB, and the Secondary Schools Management Board.
