The Association of Heads of Federal Establishments (AHFE), Enugu Chapter, on Wednesday held a fitness walk to promote healthy living and physical activity among federal workers in the state.
Speaking during the event in Enugu, AHFE Chairman, Mr. Emeka Nwokoro, said the initiative was introduced to encourage federal employees to adopt a more active lifestyle.
He observed that many workers maintain a sedentary routine, often moving from home to office and back with minimal physical exercise — a habit that negatively impacts both their physical and mental well-being.
“Exercise makes us more energetic and mentally alert. That’s the primary objective of this fitness walk,” Nwokoro explained.
He noted that the walk is usually organised every quarter but said there were calls from members for it to become a monthly event due to its health benefits.
Nwokoro also encouraged more civil servants to participate in future editions, emphasising that consistent exercise boosts productivity and general wellness.
He commended Lofish Travel and Tour Ltd. for partnering with AHFE to ensure the success of the initiative, and appreciated agencies such as the Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, and the Police Command for their support in maintaining security during the event.
A representative of Lofish Travel and Tour Ltd., Ms. Chioma Chinwetalu, said their collaboration with AHFE was part of the company’s broader effort to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles among Nigerians.
She urged participants to make physical exercise a regular habit, stressing that it enhances overall health and daily performance.
Mrs. Calista Mmeku, Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Enugu, described the exercise as refreshing, saying it helped loosen her muscles and improved her circulation.
“I already feel lighter and more relaxed after the walk,” she said.
Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu, Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Enugu, added that the activity served as a great way to relieve stress and stay active.
The health walk, according to organizers, is expected to continue serving as a platform for fostering fitness awareness and workplace wellness among civil servants in Enugu.
