China, Nigeria deepen bilateral sports ties through Wushu Championship

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, in partnership with the National Sports Commission (NSC), has unveiled plans to host the 2025 Chinese Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship, popularly known as the China–Nigeria Friendship Cup, aimed at strengthening cultural and sporting relations between both nations.

Speaking at a briefing, the Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Mr. Yang Jianxing, said the event would serve as a platform to deepen mutual understanding and foster friendship through the shared appreciation of Wushu.

“Chinese people have a deep love for Wushu and martial arts, and it’s inspiring to see many Nigerians share that passion. This championship will unite athletes and enthusiasts to celebrate the artistry, discipline, and spirit of Wushu culture,” Yang said.

He noted that Wushu, the modern adaptation of traditional Chinese martial arts, embodies values such as discipline, respect, and self-mastery—principles that align with Nigeria’s vision for youth development.

“In Chinese culture, Wushu is not just about self-defence but also about self-discipline and compassion. The strong have a duty to protect the weak—this is the true essence of Wushu,” he added.

Yang recalled that the championship was last held seven years ago before being suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said its revival marks a renewed commitment by both nations to cultural exchange and long-term collaboration.

“We hope to make this an annual celebration of friendship and shared values between China and Nigeria,” he said.

In his remarks, Mr. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the NSC, commended the Chinese Embassy for supporting the growth of Wushu in Nigeria, describing the collaboration as a reflection of both countries’ commitment to youth empowerment and cultural exchange.

He noted that the tournament would also teach young athletes vital values such as focus, perseverance, and respect through sportsmanship.

Mr. Sesan Adeboyejo, North Central Zonal Representative of the Nigeria Wushu Kung Fu Federation, announced that competitors from all 36 states and the FCT will participate in six categories, including Taiji, Sanshou (Sanda), Team Forms, and Creative Forms.

He said winners would receive cash prizes of ₦500,000, ₦300,000, and ₦200,000 for first, second, and third places respectively, alongside consolation awards for effort and perseverance.

Adeboyejo added that registration for the championship is free, while the Chinese Embassy will provide accommodation and feeding for all participating athletes.

The 2025 Chinese Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship is scheduled to hold from October 29 to 31 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, and is expected to further strengthen the cultural and sporting ties between China and Nigeria.
