Governor Namadi Establishes Ministry of Livestock to Boost Agriculture in Nigeria

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has signed a new law establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development, a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, driving innovation, and strengthening the state’s economy.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Gumel, the governor explained that the ministry was conceived as a strategic step to harness Jigawa’s vast potential in the livestock sector.

Describing it as “an important ministry,” Namadi noted that Jigawa hosts one of the largest livestock markets in Africa and stressed that the initiative would further position the state as a key player in the sector.

Alongside the livestock ministry, the governor also assented to the Jigawa Agricultural Transformation Service Law 2025, which establishes a new agency to spearhead the state’s agricultural industrialisation drive.

According to the statement, the agency will serve as a model not only in Jigawa but across northern Nigeria and the country at large. Namadi emphasised that these initiatives reflect his administration’s vision of shifting agriculture from subsistence practice to a modern, industrialised system.

“We are confident that these reforms will create more jobs, enhance food security, and strengthen Jigawa’s economy,” he said, while commending the State Executive Council for supporting the establishment of the new ministry and agency.
