FG Stresses Importance of Space Technology for Security and Prosperity

The Federal Government has emphasized that space technology and exploration are vital tools for advancing national development and safeguarding security, while also offering solutions to global challenges.

This position was highlighted during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil, where Nigeria and Brazil signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on space cooperation. The agreement was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Brazil’s Science Minister, Mrs. Luciana Santos, in the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In his remarks, Nnaji stressed that space innovation is no longer a luxury but a necessity for prosperity and security, noting its critical role in tackling issues such as climate change, food insecurity, disaster management, and digital transformation.

He described the MoU as a demonstration of shared vision between Africa and Latin America, with space technology serving as a platform for both regions to leapfrog into the future economy. According to him, the partnership aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to create an ecosystem of innovation powered by satellites, rocketry, and data analytics to drive inclusive growth.

The minister added that the agreement would open the door for joint satellite projects in agriculture, climate monitoring, and national security, as well as cooperation in spacecraft engineering, capacity building, and technology transfer. Artificial Intelligence applications, he explained, would be deployed for forest conservation in both the Amazon and the Nigeria–Cameroon basins, while Earth observation systems would boost resilience against natural disasters and food shortages.

Nnaji noted that the collaboration would provide opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and young people in both countries, while strengthening collective action toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He described the signing as the beginning of a new era in Nigeria–Brazil relations, underscoring that space science and technology are about more than exploration, but also about building economies, enhancing security, and safeguarding the planet.

Brazil’s Science Minister, Mrs. Santos, reaffirmed her country’s leadership in satellite development and bio-economy solutions, expressing confidence that the collaboration would deliver innovations with global relevance.

On his part, President Lula da Silva described the partnership as a bridge of solidarity and innovation between two leading nations of the Global South, adding that the cooperation symbolizes a shared commitment to progress and sustainable development.
