Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, has restated his administration’s commitment to intensifying the fight against criminal elements across the state following a violent attack on Iluke community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area.
The governor made the pledge on Thursday during a condolence visit to the affected community after armed attackers invaded the area a day earlier.
The incident reportedly led to the death of three persons and caused panic during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) being conducted at Government Secondary School, Iluke, as the attackers attempted to abduct students writing the exam.
Security personnel, including military operatives, local vigilante groups and hunters, were said to have swiftly responded to the situation, successfully repelling the attackers and rescuing individuals who had been abducted.
Among the casualties were the vice principal of the school and a young girl who was reportedly hit by a stray bullet. Authorities clarified that no student lost their life during the incident, contrary to earlier reports.
During his visit, Governor Ododo expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents of sustained efforts to protect lives and property across the state.
He also commended the combined security response, describing the intervention of the military, other security agencies, vigilantes and local hunters as courageous and instrumental in preventing what could have resulted in a large-scale abduction.
According to him, the swift action of the security teams averted a potentially more devastating outcome and demonstrated the importance of community-based security collaboration.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration would continue to strengthen security architecture across Kogi State to prevent future attacks and restore confidence in affected communities.
