The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has unveiled an electronic invoicing system designed to modernise tax payment processes in Nigeria, aiming to make compliance quicker, more convenient, and transparent.
This was revealed by the FIRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi.
According to Adedeji, the platform became operational on August 1, 2025, after a successful pilot phase that began in November 2024. The first phase targets large taxpayers defined as companies with an annual turnover of ₦5 billion or more.
“In less than two weeks since the launch, around 1,000 companies representing 20 per cent of the over 5,000 firms eligible have already begun integrating with the FIRS MBS platform,” he said. He added that the remaining businesses in this category must complete onboarding and integration by November 1.
MTN Nigeria was the first company to transmit live e-invoices to FIRS, marking the official start of the initiative. Huawei Nigeria and IHS Nigeria have also completed trial runs and are expected to commence full operations shortly.
The tax authority is also working with certified technology firms to provide integration and access point services, ensuring smooth adoption of the platform across industries. This collaboration, supported by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is intended to strengthen digital infrastructure and reduce compliance bottlenecks.
In a related development, the FIRS has commenced the implementation of an electronic fiscal device management system, aimed at improving real-time monitoring of Value Added Tax (VAT) collections. The new framework will initially cover large taxpayers before being expanded to medium and small enterprises, reinforcing transparency and enhancing government revenue generation.
