Ex-International Lawal Praises Super Eagles, Warns Osimhen Against Ego Issues

Former Nigerian international Garba Lawal has commended the quality and depth of the Super Eagles squad, while cautioning striker Victor Osimhen over what he described as ego-driven behaviour within the team.

Lawal praised the current crop of players, noting that the team boasts world-class talents such as Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon and Osimhen, adding that the technical crew also deserved credit for restoring joy and confidence to Nigerian football fans.

“I also commend the technical crew for giving this type of joy we have missed in the past years,” he said.

However, Lawal expressed concern over Osimhen’s recent outbursts, warning that unchecked ego could negatively affect team unity.

“The only problem with the Super Eagles’ team is that they must be careful of this ego of Osimhen. His behaviour is out of line because he’s not playing with his subordinates,” Lawal said.

He cautioned that frequent confrontations with teammates could eventually isolate the striker within the squad.

“If he keeps picking fights with his teammates, before we know it, they won’t play for him any longer. I’ve been there before and I know what it means,” he added.

Lawal described such actions as bullying, stressing that Osimhen must remember he is playing alongside other top professionals.

Despite his concerns, the former midfielder maintained that the Super Eagles remain a formidable side, capable of winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) if unity and focus are maintained.

“Outside this scenario, I think we have a fantastic team. If love and unity prevail, I don’t think anything can stop us,” he said.

He praised the team’s performance, particularly the quality of goals scored against Mozambique, which he described as world-class, noting steady improvement with each match.

Lawal concluded that avoiding internal controversies and remaining united would be key to Nigeria’s AFCON success.

“If the team remain united and focused and stay out of these little scandals and controversies, they can win the AFCON,” he said.Tools
