Emir urges media practitioners to maintain ethical standards

The Emir of Talata Mafara in Zamfara State, Dr. Bello Muhammad-Barmo, has urged journalists to maintain professionalism and integrity in their work.

He appealed to media practitioners and organisations to refrain from publishing unverified or misleading information capable of threatening peace and stability.

The call came in response to a recent viral report alleging that the emir compelled a young woman, Maryam, to marry a wealthy man, Alhaji Ma’awiyya, against her will — a story the emir described as false and unbalanced.

While receiving Maryam’s parents at his palace in Talata Mafara on Tuesday, the emir condemned the report, describing it as an act of unethical journalism.

He explained that the online outlet responsible for the story failed to verify facts before publication, thereby spreading misinformation that damaged reputations.

According to him, such falsehoods can incite conflict, create disunity, and undermine peace within communities.

Muhammad-Barmo reminded journalists that the essence of journalism lies in truth, accuracy, and balance, urging them to verify information before publication rather than rushing to break unconfirmed stories.

He also expressed surprise that a reputable media organisation would circulate an unverified account, stressing that balanced reporting remains a core principle of responsible journalism.

Earlier, Malam Nasiru Saleh and Malam Bashir Musa, who led the delegation of Maryam’s parents, visited the emir to apologise for spreading false information and to seek his forgiveness over the misunderstanding.

The emir accepted their apology and called on journalists and the public alike to promote peace and truth in all forms of communication.
