De Sapele Lions Shock Katsina United on Penalties in President Federation Cup

De Sapele Lions FC produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 President Federation Cup on Tuesday after eliminating Nigeria Premier Football League side Katsina United FC on penalties to reach the round of 32.

The Round of 64 encounter, played at the Area 3 Football Pitch in Abuja, ended 2-2 in regulation time before the underdogs secured a 5-3 victory in the shootout.

De Sapele Lions opened the scoring in the 35th minute through Seth Edjeba, whose towering header gave his side an early advantage.

Katsina United responded strongly after the break, with Ahmed Kabiru restoring parity in the 52nd minute.

The NPFL side later took the lead in the 69th minute when Manessa Yusuf capitalised on a delivery from a corner kick to make it 2-1.

However, De Sapele Lions showed resilience and grabbed a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time through Abiodun Durojaiye, forcing the contest into penalties.

Goalkeeper Arinze Okoro emerged as the hero during the shootout after making two crucial saves.

Katsina United converted only one of their four spot-kicks, while De Sapele Lions held their nerve to seal the memorable win.

Speaking after the match, head coach Precious Mayor described the victory as a reward for the team’s hard work and persistence over the years.

He said overcoming a top-flight club had boosted the confidence of his players and strengthened their belief that they could compete at a higher level in the future.

Mayor also praised club owner Elvis Ewueje for sustaining the team for more than a decade without government sponsorship.

Elsewhere, several NPFL clubs progressed comfortably to the next stage of the competition.

Enyimba International FC defeated El Sharma FC 4-0, while Rivers United FC beat G12 FC 2-0.

Ikorodu City FC recorded a convincing 4-0 victory over GAA Akanbi FC, and Akwa United FC overcame Wilbros FC 3-0.

Rangers International FC edged Godswill Akpabio FC 1-0, while Plateau United FC came from behind to defeat Ahudiannem FC 2-1.

Other teams that advanced include Bayelsa United FC, Wikki Tourists FC and El-Kanemi Warriors FC after victories in their respective fixtures.

Kwara United FC also progressed after defeating Sporting Supreme 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

The competition also witnessed more dramatic results as Bendel Insurance FC rallied to beat Katsina United Juniors FC 2-1, while Flight FC, Barau FC, Ingas FC and Sunshine Stars U-19 all recorded important wins.

Action in the 2026 President Federation Cup Round of 64 continues across different centres nationwide, with successful teams moving on to the round of 32.
