Court Jails Two Students Eight Months Each for Conspiracy and Weapon Possession

A Magistrate’s Court in Jos has sentenced two 19-year-old students, Kalifah Salisu and Auwal Nuru, to eight months’ imprisonment each after they were convicted of conspiracy and unlawful possession of daggers.

The defendants admitted guilt to the charges filed against them by the police.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Magistrate Hannatu Ashom sentenced each convict to three months in prison for conspiracy, with an option of a N100,000 fine. For possession of weapons, the court imposed either a N30,000 fine or an additional five-month jail term.

Earlier, Prosecutor Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the matter was reported on May 4 at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station by Kabiru Sani, a member of a local vigilante group.

According to the prosecutor, the two students were apprehended during a routine patrol after security personnel allegedly found them in possession of daggers.

Gokwat further stated that the offences were in violation of the provisions of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, leading to their prosecution and subsequent conviction.
